Thirteen (2003)

Two words, TEENAGE REBELLION. Let me start from the beginning. This film is about Tracy, the blonde one, 13 years old (who doesn't look 13 to me lol ) teenager and overachiever in school, plus her best friend is her mum. Well at first I guess. She gets to the point in her life, where she wants to fit in and be where the "babes" are. She wants to dress cooler, act cooler, basically she would do anything to be in the popular crowd. But what she wants the most is to be best friend with the hot, stylish, well known, slutty classmate Evie, (the brunette one).  She's not that mean, but she can change you in the worst form ever. Evie accepted Tracy when Evie told her to steal from a lady, so they could go shopping, and stupid naive Tracy just followed the instruction (since she's so desperate to join Evie's inner circle of the hottie-cool aristocracy). Since then, Tracy suddenly finds herself in a whole new world where living on the edge is cool and her loyal old best friends are like, SO NOT. Tracy changed so quickly. From being the good girl, now she's the girl who smokes pot, huffs fumes, gets her tongue and navel pierced, cuts her arm with a pair of scissors daily, and willingly will sleep with anyone she wants. She cuts herself so that she could try to coax some feeling up through the numbness of her flesh. Sex, too, must be cut off from emotion, preferably with the edgiest (read: not white) boy available. All of this, caused by only one friend. From this, you can see how friends can change you. How they could effect your life and future. Her mom, who used to be her best-est friend is left in the dust, at first confused but then seriously worried about what has happened to her daughter. Her mom tried everything to get her old daughter back, but failed worst everytime. Tracy refused any help, she was angry all the time, to everyone, well except Evie. The film ended up with Evie tricking and manipulating everyone around her and turned her back on Tracy. Let's just say, Tracy ended up disgusted by what she has become, yet she has no idea how to turn back. This film can be a wake-up-call to any troubled teen and parents. With an authenticity that is tender and merciless, the movie shows you what it looks like when youth rebellion becomes a form of fascism. What Tracy (and most troubled teens out there) needs isn't guidance but salvationNeedless to say, "Thirteen" is an uncompromising and beautifully told slice-of-life about the human condition of transitioning from a child to an adult.

That's it and as usual, I'll leave you with some soundtrack you could jam on :
  • Over Drive - Katy Rose
  • Super Bad Girl - Iffy
  • F*ck you - Youth Brigade
  • Pay Attention To Me - Orlando Brown
  • Nicotine - Anet
  • Die To Entertain - Orlando Brown
  • Killer Inside Me - MC 900 ft. Jesus (lol not kidding)

Dazed & Confused (1993)

Here's the link to trailer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqLRPGfYlBI

OMAIGOD. You guys have no IDEA how much love I have for this movie. Every teenager have to watch this. HAVE TO. This is exactly what every teen secretly wants to experience in their youth days (or is it just me). Let me just start with the cast, AMAZING.  FYI Matthew McConaugheyBen Affleck, and Milla Jovovich actually made one of their first appearance in this movie (Hold on, let me just say thank you to Richard Linklater for making this film happen). Okay, so the movie takes place in the late 70's. The time to celebrate the joys of beer blasts, pot smoking and Frampton Comes Alive (famous band in the 70's). The whole story of this movie is about the last day of school and the long night that follows it. On just one night, everything and nothing could happen. Get the idea ? This film follows a large number of teenagers, boys and girls, popular and not, "good" and "troubled," as they drive aimlessly around town, drink beer, hang out, trade adolescent life-truths, experiment with sex, fights, and in general, just trying to figure out " WHAT THE F*CK SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE". Oh, and lets not forget that pretty much everyone smokes a ton of pot. Now, the reason why I love this movie so much is because is not about whether the hero gets the girl, or the nerd loses his virginity, or the bully gets beaten up. It's simply about just trying to go with the flow, chilling, socializing and be cool. No drama, just laid back funny kind of thing. Plus, the dialog that they got going on is simply genius and funny at the same time. For example,
Man, it's the same bullshit they tried to pull in my day. If it ain't that piece of paper, there's some other choice they're gonna try and make for you. You gotta do what Randall Pink Floyd wants to do man. Let me tell you this, the older you do get the more rules they're gonna try to get you to follow. You just gotta keep livin' man, L-I-V-I-N." - Wooderson
Ahah love this line. Other than all of that, their fashion is to die for.  Everything the stoners wore had its roots in traditional 70's garb and felt very authentic. And the GIRLS, high-waisted pants everywhere omg.
Here's some soundtracks to get you dancing :
  • School's Out - Alice Cooper
  • Cherrybomb - The Runaways
  • Rock & Roll All Night - KISS
  • Low Rider - WAR
  • Slow Ride - Foghat

Okay, I guess I'm done babbling about this film. All time favorite, don't judge me. You guys should really watch it.

JawBreaker (1999)

Here the link to the trailer (watch it first !) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB5Z9Fz7Spc
Imagine Mean Girls, but 100 times more meaner. The first time I watched this was 3 years back I think, and it caught my eye right away. The plot involves a popular female clique, and the accidental murder of one of its members with a Jaw Breaker. I know right. How could you kill somebody with candy. Well they did. Successfully. Okay, let me break this one to you quickly, there are four girls. One of them is having a birthday, so the other three kidnap her, stuff a jawbreaker in her mouth and tape it shut, stuff her in the back of their car, and drive off. Upon opening the trunk, turns out, she died, and that the jawbreaker found its way inside of her throat while they were driving. So as they were covering up the "murder" at the dead girl's house, this shy girl from their school (she was there to send homework) saw the whole thing. This part is interesting, in exchange for the shy girl to shut up, the leader of the group offered her to join the group and promised her popularity. Despite Jawbreaker taking place in a high school, this isn't a film for children. It's vulgar, profane, and wickedly dark. The whole theme for the movie, to me is, girls are obsessed with popularity. And this is the perfect movie to portray that statement. This "shy" girl would do anything to join the popular group. Including hiding a murder. She got so full of herself that in the end, everything backed fire. She crashed and burned. This shy girl turns out to be bitch-ess of them all and ruined herself. Nobody liked her, being drunk in the hallways, humiliating herself,  thinks she's good in everything. Being infamous is not all that. And the mean one, well lets just say she got sent away to jail. And this also sends out the message,  not all friendship are sincere. Especially in high school. Trust me on that. Oh this film taught me everything in dealing with "popular" girls. Great movie. Plus, their fashion in perfect. I love the whole concept of this movie. It really opened up my eyes and made me realize, sometimes, being popular in high school is not a good thing. And girls should really stop being obsessed with the whole concept of being popular by acting like a bitch or constantly seeking for attention in the stupidest way ever. Really. Sorry for covering a dark comedy for my first post. To make it up to you. Here are some rad soundtracks from the movie:

  • Don't Call Me Babe - Shampoo
  • Bad Word for A Good Thing - Friggs
  • Beat You Up - The Prissteens
  • Rock & Roll Machine - The Donnas
Wanna watch the whole movie ? Here's the link to the whole movie on youtube, ENJOY : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8AzSBoqFtI

Intro I Guess.

Assalamualaikum. Let me start by introducing myself. Hello there, I'm Karissa Iris Lund, I'm 17 y/o with a lot of free time. Even though I have the biggest exam end of this year, but why not. Btw, this is NOT a personal blog, I repeat NOT a personal blog. You see, I enjoy watching movies, especially rad ones in the 90's. Those films can really inspire me in a special kind of way. So I decided, why not share it with everybody. It won't hurt right ?  So sit back and read on. Please note that I'm new with this, cut me some slack okay.
